Thermography

What is thermography?

Thermography is a screening procedure that uses a heat-detecting camera to locate areas of temperature differences in the body. Most disease processes demonstrate increased heat due to the higher metabolic activity, although others show excessive cold, such as some neurological issues. The camera picks up these temperature differences and a doctor who is trained in the art and science of thermography interpretation analyzes the results.

Why thermography?

Radiation and “touch” free, this procedure is a useful screening tool for preventative health care. Thermography is in particular a great alternative to mammography to monitor and screen breast health. While mammograms detect tumors only when already present, a thermal image can show pre-cancer or other general areas of concern so that the individual may take action to decrease the chance of cancer ever occurring. A University of Wisconsin study showed that 70% of tumors could be identified on a thermogram 8-10 years prior to a mammogram.

When thermography is used in conjunction with mammography it can also help rule out false positives, which is a huge problem with mammograms. In fact, the New England Journal of Medicine showed in a recent study that 1.3 million US women have received unnecessary and invasive cancer treatments including surgery, radiology, hormone therapy and chemotherapy over the last 30 years. Thermography can reduce the number of false positives and the over treatment of breast cancer by showing whether a tumor is metabolically active or not, when combined with anatomical testing. Because there is no radiation exposure, frequent follow-ups to track progress is not only possible but encouraged.

How do I find a thermography specialist?

Natural Family Health has aligned our selves with BTI (Breast Thermography International). We believe that BTI is the best in the business. Standardization of their picture taking process and interpretation specialists board certified by PACT (Professional Academy of Clinical Thermography) mean accurate readings for patients. Anyone can get thermography done at any time since there are no risk factors for the procedure. However, if you would like your cancer risk assessed or are wondering if you have any other health red flags that would make thermography a helpful tool in your preventative health care regime, schedule an appointment with one of our doctors today!
